I discount/discredit those elevated smart covers mostly because they seem to presuppose a flat surface in front of you. They're undoubtedly valuable if you're sitting in a coffee shop or at a meeting though, and typing can be accomplished in this way. I believe that in most situations, however, people do not use portable devices under these conditions: currently I'm typing this on top of folded leg, a moment's respite before confessions.

The Bluetooth keyboard is always an option, but not exactly portable as you mention, and I would assume that most people are using the pads as a supplement to a laptop. Being a tertiary device for most (after the laptop and the desktop), the Bluetooth keyboard becomes both a battery drain and one more thing to keep with you. But it also begs the question: why not just get an ultrabook/MacBook Air?

The major advantage to a keyboard built for the device is portability. Close it down and go. In essence, it acts as a kind of screen cover on the Transformer: not sure if such an option is available for the iPad, nor am I sure if a keyboard exists that extends battery life (as is the case with the Transformer).

Options most certainly exist for all the major products out there. What baffles me is how none of them are really marketed as "essentials" for actually taking full advantage of the product.

While tablet keyboards are certainly not perfect, they are less dire than you suggest and you can certainly get use to the keyboard with practice as a production device. Some tech journalists have even made that transition as a test and finding out it was easier than they imagined and stayed with it. Using the smart cover in the position that elevates the iPad it becomes more natural for typing.

Though I have also found that dictation on the new iPad is also quite good.

But you can also get the best of both worlds by the simple addition of a bluetooth keyboard for when you really need to do some serious keyboarding. Sure it is an extra device to carry around - but an attached keyboard on a tablet is basically the same. Though there are also plenty of iPad cases with built in keyboards that pretty much make an iPad very similar to the Transformer.

Sweet! I always enjoy reading your posts, so it will be great to catch you on the blog scene more often. Do you think you could post your homilies occasionally?

Yeah, but how many times can Lucy jerk the football away from Charlie Brown?

Still, Josh, I appreciate your explanation. I was beginning to be afraid I might be responsible for your absence from your blog. After all, I said to myself, put yourself in his shoes. Here you are in the seminary and this wacko Protestant beatnik shows up on your blog, and you think 'Well, cool!" After all, you're in the seminary, you're tasting some unusual intellectual approaches, having some brain-storming with your buddies about esoteric ideas. Maybe in the seminary there's room for an occasional wack job.

But then the day of reckoning finally arrives, and you emerge as an authentic, genuine priest of the church. And who shows up as your biggest cyber-fan? The same old Protestant from down in Redneck Hicksville with his heretical ideas. Under those circumstances I can see how a priest might start avoiding his blog and considering giving the Internet an exorcism.

But think about how I feel. When I ran across your blog, I thought it was one of the most interesting points of view on the Internet. Where am I going to find a blog that takes religion seriously, has a background in philosophy, and thinks highly of Cthulhu, the Second Amendment, and an appreciation for The Great Labowski? What's that, you say? Look around in Protestant circles? LOL Try talking about Cthulhu with your average Baptist minister, and you're more likely to get him to redeem you from the hands of Satan. So I guess I'm stuck with you, Josh, if you would just post something once in a while.

Anyway, you want theology? I'll give you theology. How about a little editorial comment on the statement made by Christ Matthews (a Catholic) about Newt Gingrich (also a Catholic) in reference to the Manichean argument (Didn't we solve this with the Nicene Creed?):

"Do you believe in it, do you believe that we're all a mixed bag, or do you believe that there's some people like Newt Gingrich who personify one side of this Manichean struggle in our life?Do you believe in it, do you believe that we're all a mixed bag, or do you believe that there's some people like Newt Gingrich who personify one side of this Manichean struggle in our life?"

Fr Josh,
when I glanced at your headline, I thought, "Cool! Josh has become a gifted social critic".

Then I read on and saw that you were talking about movies. I'll have to check out some of these flicks. (I still think your title would be a good characterization of the modern world.)

Right now, my wife and I are into the last season of Friday Night Lights, which is of particular interest to us because this is where we grew up. Although we were a lot younger and there was very little fooling around, and of course, people had yet to discover drugs. George Bush was in one junior high school, Laura Bush was in another, and I was in a third. There was only one high school.

How would you say that this Conan the Barbarian stacks up against the one that Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in?

Now that's something I don't see everyday. Well it's just not where I'm from. The framing which you used the tree from the trunk to the branches really caught my eye with this one. Lovely image.
